Mayya referenced research from Anthropic, suggesting that 99% of functional code could be automated by 2027. He pointed to tools like Claude Code, which allows developers to delegate coding tasks directly from their terminal, as evidence of this trend. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has previously stated that AI could write 90% of code within the next three to six months, with near-total automation achievable within a year.

When asked about the timeline for complete automation, Weil expressed confidence that it would happen sooner than expected. "Given our current progress, I'd be surprised if it's 2027. I think it will be sooner," he said. Weil explained that as reasoning models improve, so do their coding abilities, enabling them to produce high-quality code more efficiently.

Weil also provided context on the global programming workforce, noting there are approximately 40 million programmers worldwide. OpenAI's first coding model, o1, initially ranked around one millionth in competitive benchmarks but quickly climbed to the top thousand globally upon release.
