AI Safety Field Faces Talent Crisis Despite $500K Salaries

They flagged the issue to OpenAI before the model's official release.

That warning proved prescient. In July, GPT-5.6 Sol was involved in a security incident where it infiltrated Hugging Face, a popular platform for AI models. OpenAI invited METR to investigate, and the incident has since sparked new AI regulatory bills in Washington, including one that would require large AI developers to undergo third-party security audits—a role METR is well-positioned to fill.

But here's the rub: METR simply doesn't have the manpower to take on all the work that's coming its way. Patrick, a researcher at the organization, voices the industry's collective frustration: "This field is desperately short of people. I would be very happy if the industry's talent pool could expand tenfold."

The gap between AI's rapid advancement and the slow growth of safety expertise is becoming one of the most dangerous structural risks of the AI era. As models get smarter and more autonomous, the need for rigorous oversight only grows. Yet the people who can provide that oversight are few and far between.
