Tesla China's In-Vehicle System Gets Major Upgrade, Doubao Large Model Opens New Chapter in Intelligent Voice

Tesla owners in China recently received a special "gift" - the in-vehicle system has undergone a heavyweight update, with ByteDance's Doubao large model officially onboard. Starting July 31, Tesla China began pushing the 2026.14.13 version of the vehicle software in batches, covering all models including Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X, with newly delivered vehicles getting priority installation. After completing the OTA upgrade, owners can easily activate the new AI voice assistant by long-pressing the voice button on the steering wheel, saying the wake word "Hey, Tesla," or operating the steering wheel scroll wheel.

The most surprising aspect of this upgrade lies in the innovation of the technical architecture. The new voice assistant is based on Doubao's end-to-end voice interaction framework, skipping the traditional voice assistant's cumbersome steps of "speech-to-text, text understanding, text-to-speech," achieving direct "speech-to-speech" conversation. What does this mean? Simply put, it means faster response speed, more natural conversation, and even the ability to catch your jokes, like having a friend who understands you in the passenger seat.

In terms of functional division, this update is also quite detailed. The Doubao large model is mainly responsible for core voice command processing, such as navigation settings, media playback control, air conditioning temperature adjustment, and querying the owner's manual for high-frequency operations. Meanwhile, casual conversation and information queries are handled by the DeepSeek model. To ensure driving safety, Doubao has not been given deep vehicle control authority; all commands involving vehicle control still go through the original reliable channels.

Tesla's introduction of a local large model solution this time has sparked considerable discussion in the industry. It's worth noting that Musk has always been confident in his self-developed Grok large model, but Doubao has demonstrated irreplaceable localization advantages in handling complex Chinese contexts, emotional understanding, dialect recognition, and multi-command concurrent processing. This marks the official entry of Tesla's infotainment system into a new stage driven by large models.

Key Points

  • Upgrade Scope: Covers all Model 3/Y/S/X models, pushed in batches, with priority for new owners.
  • Wake-up Methods: Long-press voice button, say "Hey, Tesla," or operate the steering wheel scroll wheel.
  • Technical Highlights: End-to-end voice interaction, lower latency, more natural conversation.
  • Functional Division: Doubao handles vehicle control commands, DeepSeek handles casual conversation and Q&A.
  • Safety Considerations: Doubao does not involve deep vehicle control, ensuring driving safety.
