Mozilla has announced Project Nova, a comprehensive redesign of its Firefox browser that puts user control front and center. The update, expected to roll out gradually later this year, introduces a streamlined one-click toggle to disable all AI features - both current and future implementations.

A Fresh Look with Practical Upgrades

The visual overhaul adopts a more contemporary aesthetic with bubble-style tabs, rounded toolbars, and a vibrant new color palette inspired by Firefox's iconic flame logo. Mozilla has also refined its icon system to ensure better consistency between light and dark themes.

For users craving more screen space, the update brings back the popular Compact Mode, which Firefox had previously removed. This feature cleverly compresses browser controls while maintaining easy access to tab groups, split-screen views, and vertical tabs.

Taking a Stand on AI Transparency

Where Firefox really stands out is in its approach to AI features. Unlike some competitors that automatically download AI models (Chrome recently faced backlash for quietly installing about 4GB of AI data), Mozilla promises:

  • No automatic downloads of AI models unless explicitly enabled
  • Clear visibility of installed AI modules and their storage impact
  • Simple management through a redesigned Settings page
